Man in Wheelchair Suffers Critical Injuries

On Wednesday night, December 21, a man in a wheelchair suffered critical injuries after being hit by a car in southeast Denver.

According to the Denver Police Department the accident happened around 6.45 p.m. at East Quincy Avenue and South Tamarac Drive. A vehicle was traveling eastbound on Quincy when the victim was crossing the road in his wheelchair southbound.

The unnamed victim was taken to Denver Health Medical Center where he is said to be critical.
The adult male driver stayed at the scene and was arrested for investigation and on suspicion of vehicular assault.

Eastbound Quincy was closed in the area due to the incident while the investigation commenced and drivers were diverted.

The investigation is still ongoing and at this time police believe that there is a possibility alcohol could have been involved.

Teenager Killed on Thanksgiving Day

On Thursday, November 24, Thanksgiving Day, a teenager was killed in a head-on collision.

According to Colorado State Patrol the crash happened just after 3 a.m. on Interstate 25 between Highway 7 and Erie. A 2004 Jeep Liberty being driven by 25 year old Alex Rodriguez of Ft. Lupton was driving southbound in the northbound lane of the I 25 and crashed headfirst into a Subaru being driven by a 16 year male from Windsor.

Ridriguez was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette with moderate injuries and the driver of the Subaru was taken to the same hospital with injuries said to be life threatening. The passenger in the Subaru was 19 year old Kyle Nackos of Severance and he was killed in the crash

According to the police, everyone was wearing a seatbelt and Rodriguez is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol but the investigation is ongoing.

Deadly Hit and Run in Denver

On Monday, October 10, there was a deadly hit and run crash in Denver.

According to authorities, the accident happened at around 6.40 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Colorado Boulevard and Interstate 70 and involved four vehicles. The victim was 28 year old Ariel Berryman who died of blunt force injuries.

The suspect in the crash was Tyler White who had recently moved to the area from Tennessee. He was discovered swimming naked in a lake at City Park and was charged with vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

He admitted to speeding in his Dodge Charger and said he was sorry and asked for forgiveness.

Investigators requested toxicology reports and are trying to discover how he got from the scene to the lake, believing he could have walked but also he may have been given a ride from another driver.

White says he remembers the crash but has no idea how he got to City Park, nor why he was naked.

Legacy High School Bus Driver Killed

On Sunday afternoon, September 11, a Legacy High School bus driver was killed and several people were critically injured following a school bus crash at Denver International Airport.

According to authorities, at around 3 p.m., the bus ran off the right-side of the roadway and smashed into one of the pillars that support a ramp to a pickup terminal at the airport.

Around 20 people were taken to hospital – five to Denver Health Medical Center with two of those being in a critical condition, two are in serious condition and one of them is in fair condition. Another six patients were taken to Children’s Hospital Colorado where they were all said to be in fair condition and five more patients were taken to University of Colorado Hospital, where their condition is unknown.

In addition two patients went to the Medical Center of Aurora with non-life threatening and minor injuries and the patients were treated and released.

The passengers on the bus were from Broomfield’s Legacy High School who were coming back from a trip to California and were members of the varsity and junior varsity football teams.

The bus driver was Kari Chopper and she was killed in the crash. The autopsy revealed that she had a very enlarged heart and she may have had a heart attack which caused the crash.

Woman Found Dead on Interstate Following Hit and Run

On Friday, August 19, the body of a woman was found next to Interstate 76 in Brighton having been struck by a hit and run driver.

According to the Brighton Police Department, they believe that the woman was walking next to the highway between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. as they received two calls about her. They think that she was in an accident at around 4 a.m. when she drove into a streetlight on the highway’s shoulder and hit an embankment off the right side. She then walked on the eastbound side of the highway and they think she was looking for a ride. She was then hit by a passing vehicle on the westbound side near 136th Avenue by a hit-and-run driver.

She died of her injuries and was identified as Aurora resident, 51 year old Cindy Augustian.

The hit and run driver has not come forward but there is a chance he or she was unaware of the accident.

Teen Seriously Injured by Wrong Way Driver

On Tuesday, July 26, a teenager was seriously injured when hit by a wrong way driver.

According to Thornton Police the accident happened near 126th and North Washington when 17 year old Alyssa Sanchez was driving her cousin and two friends to play miniature golf. Frederick Veloz, aged 32 was allegedly drunk and on the run from police, and it is said he drove into oncoming traffic and smashed into Alyssa’s car.

Alyssa was rushed to hospital by Flight for Life suffering from a skull fracture, a broken jaw, a broken femur, and a compound fracture in her arm. She is still in a critical condition.

Two other teens were treated and released following the crash but one other, Jared Trujillo is still in a serious condition.

Alyssa’s father says that the support from the community has been overwhelming but that he hopes drunk drivers will think before getting behind the wheel as he does not want another family to have to experience the same trauma.
