On Tuesday, July 26, a teenager was seriously injured when hit by a wrong way driver.
According to Thornton Police the accident happened near 126th and North Washington when 17 year old Alyssa Sanchez was driving her cousin and two friends to play miniature golf. Frederick Veloz, aged 32 was allegedly drunk and on the run from police, and it is said he drove into oncoming traffic and smashed into Alyssa’s car.
Alyssa was rushed to hospital by Flight for Life suffering from a skull fracture, a broken jaw, a broken femur, and a compound fracture in her arm. She is still in a critical condition.
Two other teens were treated and released following the crash but one other, Jared Trujillo is still in a serious condition.
Alyssa’s father says that the support from the community has been overwhelming but that he hopes drunk drivers will think before getting behind the wheel as he does not want another family to have to experience the same trauma.
